On the common mass scale of the Milky Way satellites

چکیده
We use a hybrid approach that combines high-resolution simulations of the formation of a Milky Way-like halo with a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation to study the mass content of dwarf galaxies in the concordance ΛCDM cosmology. We find that the mass within 600 pc of dark matter haloes hosting luminous satellites has a median value of ∼ 3.2× 10 M⊙ with very little object-to-object scatter. In contrast, the present day total luminosities of the model satellites span nearly five orders of magnitude. These findings are in very good agreement with the results recently reported in the literature for the dwarf spheroidal galaxies of the Milky Way. In our model, dwarf irregular galaxies like the Small Magellanic Cloud, are predicted to have similar or slightly larger dark matter mass within 600 pc.

The origin of failed subhaloes and the common mass scale of the Milky Way satellite galaxies
We study the formation histories and present-day structure of satellite galaxies formed in a high resolution hydrodynamic simulation of a Milky Way-like galaxy. The simulated satellites span nearly 4 orders of magnitude in luminosity but have a very similar mass within their inner 600 pc, ∼ 3×10 M⊙, with very little scatter. This result is in agreement with the recent measurements for dwarf sph...
متن کاملRedefining the Missing Satellites Problem
Numerical simulations of Milky-Way size Cold Dark Matter (CDM) halos predict a steeply rising mass function of small dark matter subhalos and a substructure count that greatly outnumbers the observed satellites of the Milky Way. Several proposed explanations exist, but detailed comparison between theory and observation in terms of the maximum circular velocity (Vmax) of the subhalos is hampered...
متن کاملMassive Milky Way satellites in cold and warm dark matter: dependence on cosmology
We investigate the claim that the largest subhaloes in high-resolution dissipationless cold dark matter (CDM) simulations of the Milky Way are dynamically inconsistent with observations of its most luminous satellites. We find that the inconsistency is largely attributable to the large values of σ 8 and ns adopted in the discrepant simulations, producing satellites that form too early and there...
متن کاملThe Impact of Inhomogeneous Reionization on the Satellite Galaxy Population of the Milky Way
We use the publicly available subhalo catalogs from the via Lactea simulation along with a Gpc-scale Nbody simulation to understand the impact of inhomogeneous reionization on the satellite galaxy population of the Milky Way. The large-volume simulation is combined with a model for reionization that allows us to predict the distribution of reionization times for Milky Way mass halos. Motivated ...
متن کاملMeasuring mass loss rates from Galactic satellites
We present the results of a study that uses numerical simulations to interpret observations of tidally disturbed satellites around the Milky Way. When analysing the simulations from the viewpoint of an observer, we find a break in the slope of the star count and velocity dispersion profiles in our models at the location where unbound stars dominate. We conclude that ‘extra-tidal’ stars and enha...
